While it is a bit of a foregone conclusion that 2022 will not mark a fourth-successive title-winning season for Brad Liebenberg, he remains eager to record a good result in this coming weekend’s (16-17 September) sixth round of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) Championship, to be held at Killarney International Raceway.
Liebenberg, the reigning GTC SupaCup Champion, moved to the GTC Championship at the start of the 2022 season. Driving his Hype Energy Drinks/ Sparco / Universal Motorsport Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI, he has already recorded two race wins and is in fourth place in the championship. With this weekend being the penultimate round, it will be near-impossible for the Johannesburg driver to make up the gap to the championship leader.
However, there is still much to play for in the remaining rounds. Since the 2017 season, Liebenberg has not finished a campaign outside the top three. With Michael van Rooyen only three points ahead, he will be eager to reclaim the third place he held at the midway point of the season. His previous visit to the Cape Town circuit saw him piloting a loan-Audi S3. As the sole Volkswagen driver in the championship, he would also like to see the manufacturer break into the top three in the standings.
“Always good to travel to Cape Town and race at Killarney,” says Liebenberg. “It’s a circuit I enjoy and do well at. I would also like to introduce the Cape Town faithful to the Hype Energy Golf as it will be its first outing at the circuit. There’s also no better way to give your sponsor exposure than running at the front. So, the goal is simple; we will be going for the win.”
Official practice commences on Friday, while Saturday will see two races, the first at 13:10 and the second at 16:05. While spectators are welcome to attend the event, the action will be streamed live via the 2WheelsTV YouTube Channel.
