This coming weekend’s (16-17 September) penultimate round of the 2022 Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup will see Jean-Pierre van der Walt pushing his goal of a maiden podium even further.
With 2022 being Van der Walt’s debut season, every circuit up till now was a learning curve in his Platinum Wheels Polo SupaCup. With every round, he has been making gradual improvements and gains in position against a host of seasoned campaigners. However, the Cape Town round will be the first of two circuits at which he will compete for a second time. Consistency has also paid off, with him occupying a sixth place on the points table.
“I’m heading up the midpack at present, which is indicative of where we’ve found ourselves in most of this year’s battles, but I want more,” says Van der Walt, a two-time defending Simola Hillclimb champion. “While I am not underestimating my rivals, I believe we have learned significantly this year. There is no way we would constantly be on the tail end of the leading battles had we not kept improving. With at least one round at each circuit now under the belt, we can start to set our goals a little bit higher.”
Official practice commences on Friday, while Saturday will see two races, the first at 13:10 and the second at 16:05. While spectators are welcome to attend the event, the action will be streamed live via PW Racing’s official Facebook page and 2WheelsTV YouTube Channel.
