Final push for Liebenberg at Zwartkops

This coming weekend’s (14-15 October) Global Touring Cars (GTC) Championship season finale at Zwartkops Raceway will mark the first time since 2015 that Brad Liebenberg will not be in contention to finish the season as a national champion.

Compared to the rest of his eight-year circuit racing career, 2022 has not been the easiest campaign for the Hype Energy Drinks / Sparco / Universal Motorsport Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI driver. Having won four titles in the past three years, the best position that the reigning GTC SupaCup champion can hope for is third place. Even that would require a few surprises, and realistically, Liebenberg’s best chance will be to retain his fourth place. However, he does have two wins to his name.

“It has been a frustrating year for us, but I will not let that deter me from my goal to finish the season on a high and reward my sponsors who have backed me this season,” says Liebenberg. “We had our fair share of technical issues and race incidents this season. More than I’m used to. We made steady progress through the season, and I had an outside chance to contend for the title. Sadly, it all went downhill after that, despite all the hard work we put in. I’ve been in this sport long enough to know there’s no point in crying over spilt milk and that you put the last race behind you to focus on the next. That’s what we will do.”

Both races will be contested over 12 laps and start at 13:05 and 15:50. Spectators can purchase tickets directly from Zwartkops Raceway. The event will be streamed live via the Global Touring Cars Facebook page and the 2WheelsTV YouTube channel.
