On the back of Keegan Campos’ first 2022 Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup win in Round 6, the family outfit, backed by Campos Transport and Turn 1 Insurance Brokers, is back to a full-strength line-up for this coming weekend’s (October 14-15) season finale at Zwartkops Raceway.
A series of births in the family and business commitments abroad resulted in various line-up changes following Round 3, including the team’s absence from the grid in Round 5.
Keegan, who returned in the penultimate round at Killarney International Raceway, will aim to finish the season in third place on the points table. Having only missed one round, he has steadily been adding to his points tally, but despite his superb outing in Cape Town, he is too far from the battle for the title. Nonetheless, he leapfrogged two competitors while building a comfortable points advantage and is on target for his best championship result.
Brother Jason missed both the previous events, while the mid-season fourth round was a dismal outing for him following an incident. Having recently become a dad for the second time, he returns to the circuit, where he took two victories in 2021. His previous visit to Zwartkops Raceway was also a problematic encounter following confusion in the red-flagged first race, resulting in significant damage. Subsequently, Jason occupies an eighth place on the points table. Mathematically, it is still possible for him to match his best championship result of fourth place, but realistically he will aim to clinch the final top-six spot.
Like Keegan, father Rui also returned in the penultimate round, albeit in Jason’s car, while guest driver Iain Pepper drove his car. While Rui cannot be discounted for causing upsets in the GTC SupaCup standings, his primary aim will be to consolidate his third place in the GTC SupaCup Masters standings. Having made substitute and cameo appearances himself in the past, Rui joined the championship regularly from the second round of 2022. Business commitments and the birth of Keegan’s first child saw him miss out on Rounds 4 and 5, but he is determined to finish the 2022 season in solid form.
Also, being the team owner, Rui shares his thoughts ahead of the season finale. “If you just look at the numbers, 2022 didn’t turn out to be the spectacular year that we hoped for in racing, but with the birth of two new grandchildren, it has brought us as a family a lot closer. So while various scenarios could play out, our goal will be to finish the year as a highlight for the family. I can’t think of a better way to do that than by taking on the best in South Africa with my two boys.”
Both races will be contested over 12 laps and start at 13:05 and 15:50. Spectators can purchase tickets directly from Zwartkops Raceway. The event will be streamed live via the Campos Racing SA Facebook page and the 2WheelsTV YouTube channel.
