Pepper Snr joins Campos duo for Red Star duel

The Campos Racing South Africa team are determined to cross the halfway mark of the 2022 Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup season in a strong position. They will be aiming to take a hefty haul of points at Red Star Raceway on July 2.

Heading up the team’s efforts is Keegan Campos, fourth on the championship log, who trails the leading battle by 10 points. For Keegan, Red Star Raceway will bring back special memories. While Round 4 will be contested on the clockwise layout of the circuit, he announced his GTC SupaCup presence in the 2021 anti-clockwise round by taking a race win on debut. As one of the consistent frontrunners, he could well find himself in a position to repeat this performance.

“We’ll see what happens, but it will be awesome if we can repeat it,” says Keegan. “This year, the competition is certainly at its closest level with a lot of us in contention. We will be pushing hard though.”

Jason Campos has progressed to sixth place after his superb performance in Round 3. He trails his brother Keegan by seven points and has been present in all the front-end battles, apart from the first Zwartkops Raceway round, where he retired early. Like Keegan, he is also looking for his first win of the season.

“We really want to get the Campos name back onto the top step of the podium and hopefully we can make that breakthrough this weekend,” says Jason. “It is a tough job that lies ahead, but we look forward to the challenge.”

Rui Campos will not be competing in Rounds 4 and 5 due to commitments abroad. His seat in the team’s third car will be filled by Iain Pepper, who will be making his series debut. Pepper is a name that needs no introduction in South African motorsport. The father of Tasmin and Jordan, who both tasted success abroad, will be competing in the GTC SupaCup Masters class. While competing on off-road bikes regularly, this will be Pepper’s first circuit outing in three years.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend,” says Pepper. “The GTC SupaCup have produced some very close contests in the past two years and I’m eager to get into this battle. I won’t make any predictions, but I’ve never been someone to make up the numbers merely, so I will be pushing for a good result.”

Both the races on Saturday will be contested over a 12-lap distance and are scheduled to start at 12:45 and 15:25. Spectator tickets are available directly from Red Star Raceway, while the full race day will be streamed live on the Campos Racing SA Facebook page.
