After an outstanding third round of the 2022 Global Touring Cars (GTC) Championship, multiple SA motorsport champion Brad Liebenberg will be looking to move up the championship table with another determined performance this Saturday at Red Star Raceway, Delmas.
After winning the inaugural two titles in the GTC SupaCup, it has not been an easy GTC Championship debut for Liebenberg in 2022. Numerous setbacks have put a damper on his season, but still, he remains confident that he can turn it around as he goes on to explain, “It’s no secret that things have not gone according to plan for us from the onset. Running a brand-new racecar will be challenging, as we don’t have enough time to test, so we’ve been chasing our tails. At Aldo Scribante, the car felt like a race car for the first time despite a few niggling issues. I hope this is behind us, and we can focus on winning races.”
This will be Liebenberg’s first outing in the Hype Energy / Sparco / Universal Motorsport Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI at Red Star Raceway and will be the sole Volkswagen entrant following the previous round’s tragic events. While currently eighth in the championship, a solid points-paying weekend could see him break into the top six.
“We now know that we can contend for the podium when we have all our technical issues resolved, but we need to find some extra pace to challenge the Toyotas,” says Liebenberg. “Last time, we were able to hang on, but we want to be able to get ahead of them as well. Red Star Raceway might bring one thing into our favour, though. With 13 corners and a few slow sections, sheer straight-line speed will not be enough over a complete lap.”
Both the races on Saturday will be contested over a 12-lap distance and are scheduled to start at 12:45 and 15:25, respectively. Spectator tickets are available directly from Red Star Raceway, while the full race day will be streamed live on Brad Liebenberg’s Facebook page.
