GTC Championship leader Saood Variawa now holds four 2023 race wins to his name, following a further revision of Round 5 Race 2 results, communicated by Motorsport South Africa on Thursday, 4 August.
The race at the East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday, 22 July, saw contact between the reigning double Champion Robert Wolk (Chemical Logistics Toyota Corolla) and Variawa (Toyota Gazoo Racing Corolla). Initially, this was judged to be a racing incident with no further action required. However, a further enquiry resulted in Wolk receiving a three-place penalty for a first offence of this nature in the current season.
This decision promotes Variawa to the podium’s top step, with Andrew Rackstraw (Sparco / RDSA Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI) and Julian van der Watt (Chemical Logistics BMW 128 ti) promoted to second and third places, respectively. The revised results see Wolk in fourth place.
Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa retains their record of at least one race win per round. On the points table, the decision results in Variawa’s advantage over Wolk extended from seven to 13 points, with two rounds remaining.
Round 6 of the 2023 GTC Championship & SupaCup will be held at Killarney International Raceway on 8-9 September, with Zwartkops Raceway hosting the season finale on 13-14 October.
