GTC SupaCup rookie Leyton Fourie chasing East London double

Leyton Fourie will be focused on extending his Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup points lead this coming weekend (August 5-6) while also aiming to score his first double-victory of the season at the East London Grand Prix Circuit.

Leyton, still the youngest driver in the series, edges out stablemate Jeffrey Kruger by six points as they head into the fifth round of the championship. Still in his debut season, the Express Hire / Universal Motorsport Polo SupaCup driver has won a race in each of the last three rounds. However, he acknowledges that the key to a more comfortable points buffer would be taking both race wins on offer.

“The championship is as close as the racing on any given day,” says Leyton. “Both Jeffrey (Kruger) and I have won three races this season, but I was able to extend our advantage with the Dunlop Pole Position and fastest laps. With only three rounds remaining we need to maximise our points scoring so we don’t leave too much to do in the last round. A strong performance in East London will be crucial.”

Although the pair are well clear of the competition, many drivers are capable of winning.

“To a certain degree, the points table makes it look much more comfortable than what it feels like on track. Keegan (Campos) and Jason (Campos) will not be competing, but (Keagan) Masters has won the races that Jeffrey and I haven’t. Arrie (Arnold Neveling) has been a regular top contender, and the return of Jonathan (Mogotsi) and Daniel (Rowe) certainly makes for a talented grid. We can only focus on what we do best and that’s setting up the car during practice and giving it our all on race day.”

Round 5 of the GTC SupaCup forms part of the Extreme Festival this weekend, with two races (12:40 and 15:45) contested over 10 and 12 laps, respectively.

Spectator tickets can be purchased directly from the venue at R80pp, with children under 12 years free of charge. The entire race programme will be streamed live on the Leyton Fourie Racing Facebook page.
