Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup rookie Leyton Fourie will look to extend his championship lead this coming weekend (May 27-28) as the third round of the championship heads to Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha.
The reigning Polo Cup Champion, piloting the Express Hire/Universal Motorsport Polo SupaCup, holds a three-point advantage over Keagan Masters going into the second coastal visit for the series. The previous round, at Zwartkops Raceway, also saw Fourie taking his maiden win of 2022.
“It’s a very competitive series, and now that we’re leading, we’ll have our work cut out to stay ahead,” says Fourie. “I’m up against a former GTC champion and several seasoned campaigners like Jeff (Kruger), Jason (Campos) and Keagan (Campos), so I’ll have to be on top of my game. One small mistake could cost me a few places in a closely-contested championship such as this. As usual, Qualifying will be critical, so we’ll focus on our setup to give ourselves the best chance at a front-row start.”
At 16 years of age, Fourie, still the youngest competitor in the series, rates the circuit as one of his favourites. Having made his debut in national saloon car racing in 2020, the circuit saw him conclude an excellent year with his maiden Polo Cup race victory.
“It remains one of my best weekends in motorsport. Even though I didn’t take a victory in the final two races of 2021, I stepped onto the podium in both. Hopefully we can have another successful visit to Gqeberha.”
Practice will commence on Friday with Qualifying and two races scheduled for Saturday. Race 1 (12 laps) is set to start at 12:40, while Race 2 (15 laps) is scheduled for a 15:45 start. Qualifying and both races will be streamed live via the Leyton Fourie Racing Facebook page.
