Campos Racing SA will be looking to move up the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup points table this coming weekend (May 27-28) at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha, keen on improving on a challenging second round.
Going into Round 3, the trio is headed up by Keegan Campos, who occupies fourth place on the points table. He leads the midfield battle with 38 points to his name while finding himself 15 points adrift of third-place Jeffrey Kruger. As one of the pre-season favourites to contest this year’s GTC SupaCup title, he has shown good pace but is yet to step onto the podium in 2022. Having only joined the series in the latter part of 2021, this will also be his first outing at the circuit. He has, however, competed at the venue in other categories, including the Polo Cup.
“It has certainly not been an easy start to the season, but we expected the class to become much more competitive this year,” says Keegan. “At Zwartkops (Raceway) in the previous round, we also had our fair share of misfortune, so we will be looking to bounce back. So far, we really have seen that anyone in the top eight can compete for race wins and we have to make sure we are in a position to pounce at the right time.”
Jason Campos was one of the frontrunners in the 2021 visit to the circuit. While brother Keegan finished the first three races of 2022 in fourth place, Jason got the position in the fourth race. With 30 points to his name, he occupies seventh on the points table presently.
“I would certainly agree that it is time that we move up from P4,” says Jason. “At Zwartkops (Raceway), I had a bit of misfortune in the aborted first race, but it won’t serve any purpose to cry over what could’ve been. We must be up there when it counts this coming weekend.”
Father Rui Campos will certainly be channeling into his two previous outings at the circuit. His return to the series in Round 2 did not result in any points. Being over the age of 40 years, he is also participating in the GTC SupaCup Masters’ Interprovincial Championship, occupying fifth place with 12 points.
“Round 2 was certainly a rough return, but I am looking forward to racing at Aldo Scribante again after two superb previous outings at the circuit,” says Rui. “A strong weekend can lay the foundation for a good attack in the Masters’ class. I would love to open my SupaCup account as well this weekend, so being on the pace from the start is definitely my plan.”
Saturday will see two GTC SupaCup races. The first of these will be contested over 12 laps and is scheduled to start at 12:40. Race 2 will be contested over 15 laps at 15:45.
