Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup rookie Leyton Fourie claimed his maiden win at Zwartkops Raceway yesterday (April 23) after claiming the Race 2 victory during the second round of the championship.
The Express Hire/Universal Motorsport driver continued where he left off at the championship’s opening round in Cape Town with another impressive performance at his home circuit, despite his first outing at the circuit in a Polo SupaCup car. Qualifying on the front row and also the youngest driver on the GTC SupaCup grid, he made a good start and maintained his position before a red flag brought a halt to proceedings. At the restart, the Team Red Racing driver again held position until he was demoted to eighth following an incident that saw him rear-ended and forced to run off the circuit. After rejoining the race and satisfied that no damage occurred, he set out after the group ahead, hoping to make up the positions he lost. in the end he made up two positions to take the chequered in sixth as the laps ran out.
Starting from the pole position for the second race, the 2021 VW Polo Cup Champion, took a lights-to-flag victory despite having his mirrors filled with competitors the entire race. The victory is his first, making him the youngest winner since the inception of GTC SupaCup.
“The perfect way to bounce back after the frustration of Race 1,” said Leyton. “The car was really strong and handled well around here today, and we were confident we could get two solid results this weekend. So the race one result is a bitter pill to swallow, but that’s racing, and we move forward. Round 3 is scheduled for May 27-28 at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha.
