Campos Racing braves challenging Saturday at Zwartkops

Round 2 of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup Championship resumed at Zwartkops Raceway on April 22-23, where a trio of Campos Racing SA drivers endured a challenging weekend of mishaps.

Saturday morning’s qualifying saw Keagan Campos lead the charge from third on the grid ahead of brother Jason in fourth. Rui, making his first appearance in the class at Zwartkops, qualified fifth in the Masters class.

The opening race would be interrupted by a red flag, and in an attempt to avoid a slowing competitor, Jason tagged the rear of the car ahead. That would subsequently see him retire from the race. At the restart, Keegan remained third but would inherit second as the leader pulled off the circuit. In another unlucky incident, Keegan erred under braking for Turn 5, tagging the rear of the race leader, and as a result, would receive a three-place penalty after winning the race. Rui finished fourth amongst the Masters.

Race 2 would again see an incident-filled 12 laps. Jason would make it back onto the grid to finish in fourth, while Keegan would lose out on the opening lap dropping back several places. Rui, who up until then had an uneventful weekend, was spun around at Turn 2 a lap later. Keegan went on to finish in tenth while Rui retired from the race.

Round 3 of the GTC Championship will be hosted at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha, on May 27-28.
