Victory eludes Campos at Cape season opener

Killarney International Raceway hosted the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup’s opening championship round on March 4-5 that saw the Campos Racing SA duo of Jason and Keegan Campos finish in the top six.

Saturday morning’s qualifying session was headed up by Keegan, who qualified on the second row of the grid in fourth. Jason slotted directly behind him for the opening race in sixth.

Both races were interrupted following red flag incidents. The pair held position behind the leading trio from the restart to finish in the same order as they started. The Race 2 top six inverted grid would be advantageous to the Johannesburg drivers, with Jason making the most of it following the restart. He held onto his lead while withstanding pressure from Jeffrey Kruger and Leyton Fourie until the final lap when he erred, relinquishing his lead to finish fifth. The last driver to pass Jason at this point was Keegan, who made it two fourth-place finishes on the day.

In only his third GTC SupaCup round and first outing in Cape Town, Keegan was happy with his results. “It is quite a formidable line-up in this year’s GTC SupaCup, especially with likes of Leyton (Fourie) and Keagan (Masters) also in the mix. We knew we would find ourselves in the leading battles and we simply just did not have many passing opportunities in such a closely contested class. So yes, we have every reason to be satisfied with our results and have a good foundation to build on for Round 2.”

Although regretting his last lap mistake, Jason was equally pleased with the results. “It was a good second race, until the final lap, but we showed that we have the pace to head up the field. I think we drew some battle lines this weekend and it will certainly be a good contest at the front, one that I can’t wait to resume at Zwartkops.”

The second round of the 2022 GTC SupaCup is scheduled for Zwartkops Raceway on April 22-23.
