Killarney International Raceway will play host to the opening round of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup on March 4-5 and will see Campos Racing SA’s Jason and Keegan Campos return for the 2022 season.
After a four-month interval, siblings Jason and Keegan Campos return for another GTC SupaCup season following a strong outing in 2021. Jason, who finished fourth in 2021, recorded three victories and was a regular podium contender. Unfortunately, a few untimely mechanical problems hampered what could have been an even better season for the Johannesburg businessman.
“It’s exciting to be racing again,” explains Jason. “We have had a reasonably long break, and it’s nearly time to put the helmet on again. To see some new faces joining the grid this season is very encouraging. I’m also hoping to capitalise on a strong 2021 and wish to add to that wins column this season.”
Younger brother and 2021 rookie Keegan will again compete alongside Jason. Keegan, who only participated in the final two rounds, made an impressive debut at the Red Star Raceway in 2021, taking his maiden victory. A strong finish at the final round at Zwartkops Raceway saw the Campos Transport-backed driver claim a double podium to finish sixth in the overall championship standings.
“I had a dream debut last season,” said Keegan. “With nearly no seat time, I was able to get to grips with the car quite quickly and take a win and a few podiums. Having only raced the Polo SupaCup at Red Star and Zwartkops, Killarney will be a new challenge for me where I will have to draw on all my experience, having raced there in Polo Cup. But I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.”
Father Rui, who also competes in the championship, finished 13th in 2021 despite competing in only two rounds. Rui is set for a return on April 22-23 at Round 2, scheduled to be held at Zwartkops Raceway.
Two 12-lap races are scheduled for Saturday, preceded by Qualifying on Saturday morning. A limited number of spectator tickets are available, and the entire Extreme Festival will also be broadcast on the Global Touring Cars Facebook page.
