[clear]GTC Africa has appointed well known racing legend and motorsport official Ian Scheckter as its Driver Conduct Official. Ian has a long history in motorsport having competed in 20 Formula One World Championship races, in Lotus, Tyrell, Williams and March cars in the 1970’s. In South Africa, Scheckter also won 6 National Drivers Championships in single seaters and had success in saloon car racing too. After his driving career, Scheckter used his considerable racing experience to become a formidable motorsport official, serving on the SA Motorsport Council, as Clerk of the Course for many events and also on the selection panel for the FIA Young Driver Award.[clear]
In his role of GTC Driver Conduct Official, Scheckter will travel to each GTC Event and ensure that the drivers in the series are held to the highest driving standards. In the event of any incident or protest, Scheckter’s vast experience will be drawn upon to evaluate each situation and apply a considered and unbiased verdict to resolve disputes.
Commenting on Scheckter’s appointment series Technical Director Vic Maharaj says, “In Ian we have a hugely valuable member of the GTC Team. It is absolutely essential that if we want to run a professional series we have a permanent, travelling Driver Conduct Official who can provide consistency and experience over the course of the whole season. Our experience dictates that this is the only way a series can be successfully managed when it comes to holding drivers to high standards and ensuring quick and professional resolutions to disputes that arise from time to time. We are most pleased Ian has agreed to join us for the 2016 season”
Ian Scheckter says, “GTC is a good concept and I am very pleased I was approached to play a part in this new and exciting series which I think will bring about a revival of circuit racing in SA over time. I’ve been around for a bit and the drivers in GTC will have to learn to respect each other on track to survive. A bit like the days when I raced. They won’t be getting any protection from me, for reckless driving. Looking forward to the challenge.”
