Cape Town podium is calling Van der Walt

Jean Pierre van der Walt is eager to get his 2023 Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup campaign back on track this coming weekend (17-18 March) in the second round of the championship at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town.

Van der Walt, now in his second year in the all-Polo SupaCup class, was tipped to start the season as one of the contenders for silverware. The season opener at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, however, brought with it a host of mechanical issues to resolve, and once this was done, an incident – that dropped him down the order. Nevertheless, the Platinum Wheels driver accumulated seven points to rank ninth on the points table. However, a strong weekend could propel him into the upper half rapidly.

Van der Walt’s pace and racecraft cannot be questioned, though. Coupled with his love for the Cape Town circuit, he is looking forward to a good weekend.

“Killarney is the first circuit where I drove a Polo SupaCup in an endurance race, and a few months later, in my GTC SupaCup debut,” says Van der Walt. “I love going back there and doing well there. The support we always get is also very good. I’m confident that we will have a strong weekend; I know Lee Thompson and the LTR team have put in a lot of hard work, and I want to see it pay off.”

Saturday’s races will form part of the Extreme Festival tour and will start at 12:30 and 15:55. Spectators can purchase tickets in advance via Computicket or at the Killarney International Raceway entrance gate on Saturday. Saturday’s race programme will be broadcasted on the official Extreme Festival social media channels.
