Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup debutant Leyton Fourie celebrated his second race win the past weekend (May 27-28) at Aldo Scribante Racetrack after a dominant display in the afternoon’s reverse grid race.
The 16-year-old reigning Polo Cup champion was one of the contenders for the Dunlop Pole Position in Saturday morning’s qualifying session, securing the third place on the Race 1 grid with a time that was only 0.076 seconds slower than Team Red Racing stablemate Jeffrey Kruger’s pole position time.
Driving the Express Hire / Universal Motorsport Polo SupaCup, he lost one position at the start of the race and slotted in behind the Campos Racing SA pair for a cat-and-mouse battle that lasted for most of the race. However, going into the last corner on his way to the line, he ran wide, allowing Keagan Masters and Arnold Neveling through. Fourie finished the race in sixth place.
This, however, provided him with an advantage in the afternoon’s reverse-grid second race. Starting from the front row, Fourie was able to take the lead in the race. However, the race was interrupted by a safety car on Lap 2 following an incident further back. Fourie would command the pace up front en route to his second race victory of the season from the restart. While Neveling and Keagan Campos did their best to distract Fourie, the OMP Racing supported driver was again able to showcase a maturity level that earned him the reputation of one of South Africa’s most talented drivers.
“We came back strong today and still managed to take home a good tally of points, despite an error in Race 1,” said Fourie. “Much like in Polo Cup, the qualifying session has almost become the most important session of the weekend as it pretty much sets the tone for your races. From its inaugural season til now, SupaCup has become so closely contested that any one of five to six drivers could clinch pole position. From there we’ve seen that despite the push-to-pass function there is very little opportunity to overtake. We’ll likely see the same at the next round at Red Star so qualifying well there will be paramount. I’d like to thank Ettienne (van der Linde) and the boys from Universal Motorsport once again for the effort the weekend.”
Celebrations on Sunday took a backseat following the tragic news regarding the accident of the Volkswagen Motorsport transporter that cost the lives of Roger van Schalkwyk and Floyd Sipinyu. Leyton Fourie would like to express his sincere condolences to the families and loved ones involved.
Round 4 of the GTC SupaCup will occur at Red Star Raceway outside Delmas on July 1-2.
