The Campos Racing SA trio of Rui and sons Jason and Keegan Campos achieved their goal of recording podium results this past weekend (May 27-28) third round of the Global Touring Cars (GTC) SupaCup, held at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, Gqeberha.
Backed by Campos Racing and Turn 1 Insurance Brokers, the drivers performed well throughout Friday’s practice sessions. On Saturday, Jason secured second place on the Race 1 grid, losing out on his second Dunlop Pole Position by 0.047 seconds. Keegan lined up right behind him on the staggered grid in fourth place, while Rui’s 10th place saw him head up the GTC SupaCup Masters battle.
Keegan made up a position at the start of Race 1 to slot in behind Jason. The pair kept race winner Kruger in check throughout while also fending off the persistent group behind them consisting of championship leader Leyton Fourie, Keagan Masters and Arnold Neveling. After the 12-lap distance, the pair recorded the team’s first podium results of the 2022 season, Jason in second place and Keegan completing the podium.
Further back, Rui had a good tussle with Nathan Hammond to finish in 10th place and record his first GTC SupaCup point for the season. He also took the GTC SupaCup Masters victory from Nick Davidson, who finished two positions further down.
Keegan concluded the podium in the afternoon’s second race, chasing down runner-up Neveling to the flag. Jason finished just behind him in fourth place, with the pair wasting no time getting themselves into contention for the podium from the reverse grid start. Rui, however, recorded a DNF after a puncture saw him eventually stranded on the side of the circuit.
“We finally managed to break that P4 shackle of 2022,” said Jason. “It is ultra-close between the frontrunners in the GTC SupaCup, but we managed to find that little bit of extra pace to push us to the front when it mattered most.”
“Given our two previous rounds, it is certainly good to finish the day with a double-podium.” said Keagan. “We certainly made the most of our opportunities, I really don’t think we can look back on any point saying we could’ve done more.”
“I would’ve liked to have made it two wins, but we opened the account today,” said Rui. “At the end of Race 1, it became tricky when the GTC cars started to lap us, but I managed to make the most of the situation to record a points finish while taking the Masters win.”
While this was the team’s best weekend, celebrations quieted down following Sunday morning’s fatal incident involving the Volkswagen Motorsport GTC transporter outside Colesberg en route back to Gauteng. The Campos Racing SA team would like to express their sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of Roger van Schalkwyk and Floyd Sipinyu, who both passed.
